Introduction

I want to say up front that I do not consider myself a Dinosaur Jr 'expert' - there will be many people who read this who know more, own more, have seen many more gigs than I have... But I am a fan and an enthusiast (one of my kids has the middle name 'J' in honour of Mr Mascis) and my overriding aim in writing this blog is to celebrate 40 years' worth of incredible music.

I am going to rank all 171 songs. This is something I have previously done with The Wedding Present and Cinerama - although I have never attempted it with The Fall, the aritist about whom I have written the most (including a book) - but I am well aware that many people find the whole concept of ranking music reductive and pointless. Which it undoubtedly is: but there is great joy to be had in exploring a back catalogue and trying to assemble it into some kind of order. 

All I would say is this: if you would like to engage in the process and provide constructive criticism and disagreement, then fill your boots - I'd be interested to hear your views. However, if you're firmly in the 'reductive and pointless' camp, then then that's fair enough - but can I give a polite and respectful reminder that nobody's forcing you to read this...

I have spent a long time listening and re-listening to these songs, and it's been an absolute joy. I hope you enjoy reading and (dis)agreeing with my thoughts.

  A quick note before we start... As I mentioned in the introduction , my overriding aim in writing this blog is to celebrate 40 years' worth of incredible music. I think that the Dinosaur Jr back catalogue represents a remarkably consistent body of work. Having said that, no artist (or at least not one I've ever come across) has a completely flawless record. Even the very best and most consistent have a few dodgy moments scattered amongst their back catalogue. These are often, for example, b-sides or throwaway covers recorded for various artists compilations - tracks that the artists themselves wouldn't necessarily consider part of their 'proper' output.  I mention this because this post - which covers the bottom end of my list - is inevitably going to read rather negatively; and I want to reiterate that I am a huge fan of the band. It won't take us long to get to some cracking songs, trust me. But you have to start somewhere... Anyway, enough waffle - let'

Weirdness Flows: The Songs of Dinosaur Jr (141-150)

  150 Not The Same  Where You Been (1993) After a run of four pretty full-on tracks, the first side of Where You Been concludes with a thoughtful, introspective song. Framed around a sonorous arpeggio and a simple acoustic strum, it also features some delicate piano tinkling and gains gravitas from the portentous timpani. The chord shift into the chorus (e.g. at 1:12 and 2:06) is moving; the overlayed vocals at this point also add some emotional heft. However, J’s wavering vocal feels over-stretched at points, and the song overstays its welcome by a couple of minutes.   149 Don't You Think It's Time Grace of My Heart (OST) (1996) / B-side to Take A Run At The Sun (1997) Slow-tempo country-tinged number with some nice touches of pedal steel. Like its A-side, it was credited to J alone on the soundtrack album of Grace of My Heart   before appearing on a Dinosaur Jr release.
